The Millenial Trend People Are Afraid to Talk About
My current job has nothing to do with my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.
I’m 29 and recently accepted a position in a line of work I never would have seen myself in — the finance industry.
A little backstory: I have my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Vocal Performance. I’m a classically trained operatic soprano and I’ve performed since the age of 4. My entire life was set up to be a professional performer.
Up until this past January, I genuinely thought I was going to keep pursuing music as a full-time career. I was known as “the singer” at my high school and a common nickname the upper-schoolers gave me was “diva.” I got all the lead roles in every school show from 10th grade onwards.
To shift to the finance industry is a left-turn no one could have seen coming — not even myself.
So, what happened?
Well, I got burnt out. Plain and simple. My mental state was suffering badly, and where I was with my finances didn’t help.
I had an audition in Chicago for a well-known opera company in Utah and the entire day I was dreading the audition. I never dreaded auditions until this past year (2019, really) and this feeling came as a shock.
