The Harsh Truth About Chasing Your Dreams
You were told to chase your dreams from a number of people, especially your parents. But now you’ve realized it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.
Doubt is debilitating. I get it. I’m a professional opera and musical theatre singer, and that voice of self-doubt consumes my thoughts daily.
For so long I’ve heard my parents say, “Just keep going! Don’t stop believing in yourself! You’re so talented! There’s nothing you can’t do if you just practice and work hard!” And on and on and on…
Hell, I’ve had music professionals tell me these exact things at certain points in my life. But at least most of them sprinkled in the harsh realities of what pursuing a professional music career would actually look like.
Still, I thought my dreams weren’t that far off, and that I really was capable of achieving them. I have a strong support system, I legitimately think I’m talented, and I have a pretty big-name school to tout around on my resume…
Reality Check:
No one gives a shit how much you talk yourself up or what school you went to. That’s rule #1. It’s actually detrimental to your career if you talk about what hot shit you are. People will think you’re an asshole and not hire you simply because of your attitude. And that’s the tea.
